Description: This presidential campaign token, produced by the democratic party for the 1844 election, featured the first "Dark Horse Candidate" James Knox Polk to be elected president. It also featured George M Dallas (namesake of Dallas TX) a big proponent of the annexation of Texas to the US. The Democratic party was beginning to fracture along north/south lines over the issue of slavery and the treatment of runaway slaves in the north. Polk was a little known but very viable candidate because he wasn't an opponent to either the Northern Democrats or the Southern Democratic party. He ran against Whig party heavyweight Henry Clay and not the incumbent president John Tyler as the Whigs felt betrayed by Tyler's veto of the national bank. It ended up being a bad decision for the Whig party as Polk won the election handily, and Texas became a state in 1845. Why is this such a sought-after campaign token? I assume it's simply a matter of rarity. It's only about once a year or less that one of these goes up for sale. The token is made from what appears to be white metal or German Silver, I wouldn't say that the dark spots look like tin pest, they appear more like tarnish.
