Description: In Dick Graham's book "A Registry of Die Varieties of Reeded Edge Half Dollars 1836 - 1839", he states in his "Collector Comments" for the 1839 GR-3, "A very scarce variety that you should pick up whenever you see one and look to upgrade if you come across a better one later." (Emphasis added by the writer). Only 3 die varieties, out of a total of 56 for the Reeded Edge series, have an R-5+ Rating and there are only 6 other very rare varieties with higher ratings. The 1839 GR-3 is easily identified by several of its Obverse & Reverse features. Easy to see on this coin are the die lines in the dentils below the date & at Star 4. (See circled areas on the 3rd & 4th pictures.) On the Reverse, there are 2 die gouges in the tail feathers; the die line up to the right from dentil below O L, and the lump between UN. (See circled areas on the 5th & 6th pictures.)
