ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Josiah Henshall (1801?-1869) from an original study by James C. Allen (fl.1821-1833). PROVENANCE: A plate published in "Select Illustrated Topography of Thirty Miles Round London, Comprising Views of Various Places Within This Circuit", by Trotter, William Edward; published by Simkin, Marshall & Co. TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Very good. Suitable for framing. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Dorking is a market town in Surrey, England between Ranmore Common in the North Downs range of hills and Leith Hill in the Greensand Ridge, centred 21 miles (34 km) from London. St Martin's Church is an Anglican parish church. It is a Grade II* listed building and surviving parts of the structure date back to the Middle Ages. It in the archdeaconry of Dorking, in the Diocese of Guildford. The church is the main Anglican parish church in Dorking. In the 19th century, sizeable renovations were done to the church. Between 1835 and 1837 the nave was rebuilt. From 1866 to 1868, this was followed by the chancel being rebuilt. In 1872, the nave and aisles were restored again, this time under the direction of the architect Henry Woodyer. From 1873 to 1877, a new tower and a spire (210 feet high) were added.
