It is from The Geographical Annual published in Philadelphia by Carey, Lea & Blanchard, 1834, a facsimile copy of the title page is included for authenticity. The map is not mounted, matted nor framed, being sold as a single loose map as seen in the main pic. A very nice miniature size that would be very economical to frame. If you are looking for a beautiful map with strong color, they don't get much better than this. Historical Notes: The Carey Family of Cartographers, included the father Mathew Carey (1760-1839) and his son Henry and son-in-law Issac Lea, were prolific printers and publishers in America. Mathew Carey was born in Dublin, where at the age of 17 he published pamphlets on the Severity of the Irish Penal Code and another criticizing the English Parliament, after which he was sought by the House of Commons for prosecution. Thus he fled to Paris and met Benjamin Franklin who employed him for a year in his printing office in 1781, at the end of the American Revolution. He returned to Ireland for a period and published a couple of Irish Nationalist newspapers that again landed him in hot water with the English Crown and in 1784 he had to flee Ireland by ship, dressed as a woman, back to the United States where he opened his own printing company and there prospered. This map is from the American edition of The Geographical Annual, which was originally first published in London under the aegis of King William IV and the maps were all stated to be by the cartographer Thomas Starling, although all references to the King of England and Thomas Starling are conveniently left out of the American edition, since the American copyright law of 1790 excluded the protection of international works by non citizens resulting in a plethora of American knockoffs, although this emission of the British details must have also bode well with Carey's strong Irish nationalism that found a home in the free press of the new America. Size: The map image measures, between the neat lines, approximately 3 1/2 by 5 1/2 inches (9x14cm) and is on a 4 1/4 by 6 3/4" (11x17cm) page as seen in the pic with a margin all around for framing as seen in the main pic.Condition: The map is in Very Good to Excellent condition with original hand coloring, blank on the reverse. Other than a couple fo very minor spot in the margin, it is very clean with bright color that would frame up well, see the pic for more on condition. The pics are of the actual map.Payment Details: We accept most major credit cards through Paypal. Please ask if you have any questions about payment.
