Description: 1833 Essequibo & Demerary 1/4 Guilder William IV Scarce Silver Coin - holed Diameter 16 mm Silver 0.816 Bit of history - In 1825 as part of an Empire wide move to have British coins used, Imperial silver coins were sent to these colonies. These soon disappeared from circulation as did the Spanish dollar coins. In 1831 Berbice was joined with Demerary and Essequibo to form the Colony of British Guiana although the coinage did not reflect this until 1836. The guilder coins went out of use after the dollar and its cent were adopted in 1839.
