Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Gordon Castle, Banffshire." A view of Gordon Castle located near Fochabers in Moray, Scotland. Historically known as the Bog-of-Gight, it was the principal seat of the Dukes of Gordon. DATE PRINTED: 1831. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 13.5 x 10.5 cm, 5.25 x 4.25 inches (small) plus margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by William Fairhorn from an original study by John Preston Neale. John Preston Neale (1780–1847) was an English architectural and landscape draughtsman. Much of his work was drawn, although he produced the occasional watercolour or oil painting. His drawings were used on a regular basis by engravers. A major work, the Views of the seats, Mansions, Castles, etc. of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland was published in 6 volumes. PROVENANCE: Published in “Views of the Seats, Mansions, Castles, etc. of Noblemen and Gentlemen in England” (London : 1829-1831). TYPE: Antique steel plate engraving printed on paper. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Gordon Castle is located near Fochabers in Moray, Scotland. Historically known as the Bog-of-Gight, it was the principal seat of the Dukes of Gordon. Following 18th-century redevelopment, it became one of the largest country houses ever built in Scotland, although much has since been demolished. The original castle was built by George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly in the 1470s and enlarged by his grandson. Architect John Adam was commissioned, alongside the French architect Abraham Roumieu, to redesign the castle in 1764 but this did not come to fruition. Eventually the commission fell to the lesser-known Edinburgh architect, John Baxter, who rebuilt it in 1769 for Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon. The central four storey block incorporated a six-storey medieval tower called the Bog-of-Gight, and was flanked by a pair of two-storey wings. The main facade was 568 feet (173 metres) long. Most of the castle has been demolished, but the Bog-of-Gight and one of the wings—now a detached medium sized country house in its own right—survive.
