Description: Submitted for your consideration is a small family Bible, printed by J Howe of Philadelphia, and published by Silas Andrus of Hartford CT in 1830. This full-leather Bible is trimmed in gilt on its 6-band Spine, and around all perimeters of both covers. It is in excellent condition, and belonged to the French (Stevens) family of Grafton NH New Hampshire, as per the handwritten birth names and dates in the opening pages. That list is headed by an R S French, born May 18, 1805. On another page is written in large and fancy script;Robert S FrenchAmoskeag, N.H.Jan 25, 1832I presume Robert S French to be the same R S French, born in 1805 - and still a bachelor in 1832, as it would be 14 more months before Naomi Stevens wrangled him on March 19, 1833 (as written opposite Title page). This suggests that he may have worked for Amoskeag Mfg Co in the Manchester Millyard, less than a year after its incorporation on July 01, 1831. Hard to be sure about that, but is yet very possible. Robert S French would pass at 75 years of age on November 05, 1881 in Grafton NH. He was born in Pembroke NH, according to his Death Certificate. This Bible includes both the Old and New Testaments, from the Original Tongues, and contains 12 engraved plates of different biblical scenes. Most of the Text Block is pretty clean for a book nearly 200 years old, but there is some Foxing. There are stains/discoloration in the lower corners of final pages and rear endpapers, as manifested in final photo. There is also an old calling card with flowered-print design for Charles E Caswell. Found one such named person who lived from 1871-1928, and is buried at Blossom Hill Cemetery in Concord NH. Cannot swear it's same individual, but is him more likely than not.
