Devéria primarily painted in watercolor, but was most famous for his lithographic illustrations and portraits. Around the time he created these erotic drawings, he was appointed director of the prints department at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. Devéria produced quite a few erotic lithographs, mostly of men and women. However, the novel for which he made these images includes several lesbian scenes.
