Description: Up for sale is a historically significant pair of account books (ledgers/daybooks) belonging to Orlando Kellogg, a U.S. Congressman. Orlando Kellogg (June 18, 1809 – August 24, 1865) was a distinguished U.S. Representative from New York and a friend of Abraham Lincoln serving during the latter half of the American Civil War and the early days of Reconstruction. His early career began as a carpenter before he transitioned to law, becoming an attorney in Elizabethtown, New York, where he was admitted to the bar in 1838. He also served as the surrogate of Essex County from 1840-1844. Kellogg later entered politics, first as a Whig in the U.S. Congress from 1847-49, serving with congressman Abraham Lincoln and later as a Republican congressman from 1863-65 until his untimely death while in office. His death notice, published in the Troy Weekly Times, September 2, 1865 states: "Orlando Kellogg, of Essex county, for many years past taking a prominent position in public matters, died at Elizabethtown on Thursday last. Mr. Kellogg was elected to Congress in 1846, and again in 1862 and 1864. He was a diligent, laborious representative, and deservedly popular. His death creates a vacancy to be filled at the next election. At the time of his death Mr. Kellogg was fifty-six years of age." These two account books span from about 1829 to 1836, covering Kellogg's life from approximately age 20 to 27, prior to his legal career. The books contain numerous entries detailing his work as a carpenter, with records of jobs such as crafting cellar windows, doors, blinds, and benches. Internal evidence confirming the provenance of these account books includes:1. Kellogg's name is lightly inscribed on the front cover, along with the date August 1832, though partially obscured by what appears to be water stains. 2. Several names mentioned within the books correspond with residents of Elizabethtown and surrounding areas as recorded in the 1830 census. Notably, one ledger includes records of inspecting schools in Elizabethtown, with additional mentions of the Kellogg family. 3. A specific entry on September 6, 1831, documents the purchase of a house from Harry Adams for $175, a transaction verified in Book K, page 122 of the county deed records (see FamilySearch). Details of the account books: The first book is nearly full, with approximately 140 pages of entries, some accounts with certain individuals, and some daily transactions. His signature is contained in one of the entries detailing a note between Orlando Kellogg and Oliver Persons. The second book appears to serve primarily as some type of index for the first and is less important in content. It has around 54 pages with information; the remaining pages are blank.Despite evidence of water stains, the books are in relatively good condition for their age. The covers are thin wood, showing some chipping, particularly on the second index book. Please see photos. These account books offer a fascinating glimpse into the early life and work of Orlando Kellogg. Dimensions: Each book measures approximately 6.3" x 7.4" x 0.6".
