Additional Information American Artist Rembrandt Peale was introduced to the First President of the United States, George Washington, in 1787 by his father, Charles Wilson Peale. An accomplished painter and illustrator from an early age, Peale became known for his portraits and landscapes throughout his career. Peale's work bears a classic aesthetic and distinct style that was widely popular during his lifetime. In 1822 Peale relocated to New York City and began to attempt what he hoped would become the standard portrait of Washington based on an illustration he drew in 1795 as well as portraits created by his father and artists John Trumbull and Gilbert Stuart. Washington remains one of the most iconic figures in American history. As a founding father and Commander in Chief of the Continental Army, his role in the American Revolution and the formative years leading up to American independence from British colonial rule cannot be underestimated. Washington's two terms as President helped establish numerous traditions regarding how President would serve as the highest office in the United States. This included limiting their service to two terms, which was not codified into law until the ratification of the 22nd Amendment in 1951.  This lithograph's incredible detail and distinguished style immediately transports the viewer back to the early years of American independence. Washington's influence on the political ideas leading up to the American Revolution and his skill as a General were considerable contributions to the success of the American forces against the British Army and defined his legacy.
