1824 Antique Print; Spithead, Hampshire after J.M.W. Turner

Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) antique print "Spithead.", Hampshire. Turner was as much a marine painter as a landscape artist; this is one of his history paintings set at sea. In 1807 he went to Portsmouth to see the arrival of two captured Danish ships and make sketches upon which this painting was based. The original title referred to this event. By the time the work was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1809, political outcry against the operation was such that he felt it advisable to change the title to ‘Boat’s crew recovering an anchor’ and here simply 'Spithead'. DATE PRINTED: 1824 or shortly afterwards. SIZE: The printed area including titles is approximately 27 x 21.5 cm, 10.25 x 8.5 inches (medium) plus margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by William Miller (28 May 1796 – 20 January 1882) after a drawing by Joseph Mallord William Turner. The son of a London barber, Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775 - 1851) is generally acknowledged to be the most creative and perceptive artist that Britain has ever produced. By the age of 13 he had already been admitted to the Royal Academy Schools and a year later was exhibiting his first watercolours at the Academy. By 24 he was an associate member. PROVENANCE: This plate was published in 'Picturesque Views on the Southern Coast of England' in 1824. Later re-issued in “The Turner Gallery, a Series of One Hundred and Twenty Engravings” (Virtue & Co), between 1859 and 1861. TYPE: Antique copper plate engraving printed on paper. VERSO: There is nothing printed on the reverse side, which is blank. CONDITION: Very good. Suitable for framing. Please check the scan for any blemishes prior to making your purchase. Virtually all antiquarian paper is subject to some normal aging due to use and time which is not significant unless otherwise stated. AUTHENTICITY: This is an authentic antique print, published at the date stated above. I do not offer reproductions. It is not a modern copy. The term 'original' when applied to a print means that it was printed at the first or original date of publication; it does not imply that the item is unique. RETURNS POLICY: I offer a no questions returns policy. All I ask is that you pay return shipping and mail back to me in original condition. BACKGROUND INFORMATION: Spithead is an area of the Solent and a roadstead off Gilkicker Point in Hampshire, England. It is protected from all winds, except those from the southeast. It receives its name from the Spit, a sandbank stretching south from the Hampshire shore for 5 km (3.1 mi); and it is 22.5 km (14.0 mi) long by about 6.5 km (4.0 mi) in average breadth. Spithead has been strongly defended since 1864 by fortifications complementing those of Portsmouth. It was in 1806 that W F Wells suggested that Turner's work could reach a much wider public, were they to be engraved and published in book form. Turner etched the plates himself under and conscientiously supervised every stage of their production, it was even said that he trained an entire school of engravers. This process ensured that the engravings of Turner's work were indeed as effective and desirable as his paintings. From the age of 19, until his death in 1851, Turner was involved in the production of over 800 prints based on his paintings, watercolours, and drawings. He was intimately concerned with the production and reworking of plates after his works, often providing copious instructions and suggestions to the engravers. It was through the dissemination of these prints that Turner gained his reputation as one of the greatest and best-loved English painters. Please explore my ebay shop for more antique prints.
