A true triple-decker, a fashionable form of publishing in 19th century. First edition of Sir Walter Scott’s (1771-1832) novel. Many of his works are considered classics, and he had a major impact on European and American literature. His knowledge of history and literary facility equipped him to establish the historical genre as an exemplar of European Romanticism. Triple-deckers was a standard form of publishing for British fiction and was significant in the development of the modern novel. Printer Archibald Constable was one of the most significant publishers of the 1820’s and made a success of publishing expensive, three-volume editions of Scott. COLL1820FIJS-623
