Goldsmith attended Trinity College and was tutored by Theaker Wilder, an eccentric Irish academic and first Regis Professor of Greek. His education mainly seemed to have given him a taste for fine clothes, playing cards, singing Irish airs and playing the flute. He was described by his contemporaries has being prone to envy, a congenial and impetuous and disorganized personally who once planted to emigrate to America but failed because he missed his ship. Thomas de Quincey wrote of him “All the motion of Goldsmith’s nature movies in the direction of true, the natural, the sweet, the gentle.” COLL1806CHJX-623
