Description: 1803 newspaper DeWITT CLINTON is named MAYOR of NEW YORK CITY when the previous Mayor resigns - inv # 9L-402 SEE PHOTO----- COMPLETE, ORIGINAL NEWSPAPER, the Connecticut Courant (Hartford, CT) dated Oct 19, 1803. This newspaper contains an inside page report that DeWITT CLINTON has been appointed MAYOR of NEW YORK CITY when Edward Livingston, the former mayor, resigned. DeWitt Clinton (March 2, 1769 – February 11, 1828) was an American politician and naturalist who served as a United States Senator and was the sixth Governor of New York. In this last capacity, he was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal. Clinton was the leader of New York's People's Party and was a major rival of Martin Van Buren, who was the Attorney General of New York during part of Clinton's governorship. Clinton believed that infrastructure improvements could transform American life, drive economic growth, and encourage political participation; and he heavily influenced the development of the New York State and the United States. He won election by the New York State Legislature to the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the resignation of John Armstrong, Jr., and served from February 23, 1802 to November 4, 1803. He resigned, unhappy with living conditions in newly built Washington, D.C., and was appointed Mayor of New York City. He served as Mayor from 1803 to 1807, 1808 to 1810, and 1811 to 1815. While serving as Mayor, he organized the New-York Historical Society in 1804 and was its president. Very good condition.
