Description: 1803 copy of John MacGowan's Life of Joseph, Son of Israel, printed by Ebenezer Merriam. Scabbard binding retains original boards, and newspaper scraps used as an early cover! Condition G overall. 12mo, about 5 3/4"x 3 1/2" x 3/4". Text block is solid and tight. Evenly darkened with few stains. Some worm damage to ffe, title page, and preface. Corners of text block rounded from use. Text is both sewn conventionally and stabbed through with leather strips like the original. Book was recovered in quarter calf, with laid paper over boards. As much original and contemporary material was retained as possible. Original wooden scale boards retained, as well as original pastedowns. Newspaper scraps from an 1828 edition of the Batavia Republican newspaper out of Batavia, NY were pasted on the inside and outside of the boards to cover the wood as the original paper wore away. The scraps have been glued back approximately where they were found; they do a great job of showing how folks used to take care of their books. Corners of the boards have chipped away, and in lieu of adding new board material, the new paper covers were folded around the edges to strengthen them. Written as a children's book. Very popular in the Early Republic (1790s-1810s). Owned by a Nancy McIntier. Ebenezer Merriam was a printer in Brookfield, Massachusetts. He was an apprentice to the famous printer-patriot Isaiah Thomas of Worcester. When Merriam started his own firm in 1796, Thomas gifted him a printing press, which was actually used by Benjamin Franklin! The earlier the date, the more likely one of Merriam's books was printed on Franklin's press! Merriam also lends his name to the ubiquitous Merriam-Webster dictionary by way of his nephew, who bought the rights to Noah Webster's dictionary in the 1830s.
