Description: A beautiful hand carved Italian stone portico lion in the Florentine manner with the long straight mane and accentuated claws. From the 17th or early 18th century, this was used on a Palazzo above the door (hence 'portico' ) to ward off infectious diseases and give protection to the building and family inside. Wonderful condition age, as this had some protection from the weather, being placed above a door usually with a flat triangular arch, and you can see the light parts around the jaws and lower right mane to the front and to the mane and foreleg where rain etc did not quite get to him . Measures just over 21cm across, 17.5cm high and approximately 9cm deep at the front. A great find. Please ask any questions before buying or making an offer. Will be well packed and sent trackable.
