Dr. John Greenwood (1760-1819) was the personal dentist to George Washington and was responsible for making and maintaining Washington's dentures. Greenwood made four sets of dentures for Washington, which were carved from hippopotamus tusk and elephant ivory and held together with gold springs. Greenwood also left a hole in the dentures to accommodate Washington's remaining tooth, which he believed should be saved if possible. When Washington finally lost this tooth, he gave it to Greenwood, who kept it in a special case.Greenwood also invented the first foot-powered drill, which he called the “dental foot engine” in 1790. Greenwood was the son of Isaac Greenwood, the first native-born American dentist, and the grandson of Isaac Greenwood, a mathematics professor at Harvard University. Washington had many dental problems throughout his life, losing his first adult tooth at age 22 and having only one left by the time he became president. He complained that his dentures were uncomfortable and made his lips bulge.
