Description: A genuine, antique 18thC volume containing two full scores, that of the Oratorio Joshua, and of the Opera Julius Caesar both by Handel. No publisher's details, but these come from the complete Arnold edition published in 1789, as detailed in William Smith's definitive "Descriptive Catalogue" (1970). Details of Joshua in the Catalogue are found in number 8 (page 113), and of Julius Caesar, in number 12 (page 33). Samuel Arnold, who was himself a composer and organist, worked on the first complete edition of Handel's output. Smith describes the edition as "invaluable for the Handelian" (page xvi). Joshua forms numbers 56-60 of the edition, and Julius Caesar, 43-47 (relevant numbers found at the bottom of each page of the scores). Julius Caesar(Giulio Cesare) is presented in Italian, Joshua in English. This volume has been professionally rebound retaining the original marbled boards and endpapers. The front endpaper has two old name inscriptions, one of which is Elizabeth Oliveria Cromwell (1777-1849) who seems to have been a direct descendant of Oliver Cromwell. Of even greater interest is the frontispiece, the "Apotheosis of Handel", designed by Rebecca after Hudson, engraved by Heath and published by Cox. Arnold seems to have used a number of different engravings in the Edition as frontispieces: the Apotheosis is a very scarce image.Giulio Cesare has a decorative title page engraved by Strongitharm, Pall Mall. The two scores, as bound here, are in a very good condition, complete with the contents pages and lists of subscribers. All in all, a wonderful and important offering for the serious Handelian collector. I will be listing more 18thC Handel scores: please keep an eye open for my other items. Size: the covers measure approx. 38cms x 28.5cms. Pagination: Joshua: frontispiece, title page, score 3-168, Contents 169, List of Subscribers 170-171.
