Ireland." Debates on Palmistry is a view of 5 men sitting around a table discussing palmistry, studying hands. Owl on left. A woman sweeps (brush missing). Suit of armour on right. Stuffed crocodile above cupboard, where are skeletons. The Staymaker is probably one of the sketches for a series of paintings about a 'Happy Marriage' which Hogarth planned but did not finish. This scene may show a young country squire's wife being fitted for the ball-gown she is to wear in the following scene, The Dance. Her husband sits in the background, wearing a voluminous dressing gown. He is playing with his youngest child, held up by a doting nurse. The boy in the centre plays at soldiers, while the little girl to the right pours milk into the staymaker's hat for the kitten under the table. DATE PRINTED: c.1822 using Hogarth's original plate first published in 1782 (dated on the print). SIZE: The printed area of each is approximately 36 x 30 cm, 14.25 x 11.75 inches (large) with wide margins. ARTIST/CARTOGRAPHER/ENGRAVER: Engraved by Joseph Haynes (British, 1760–1829) from the original picture by Wm. Hogarth. William Hogarth FRSA (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". PROVENANCE: Published in 'The Works of William Hogarth, from the original plates restored by James Heath', London: Baldwin and Cradock. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates.
