Description: On offer: an original (i.e. not a later reproduction) pair of antique engravings showing"Receipt for March to Finchley" and below "The Farmer's Return" Printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with large, full margins as published for the Heath edition in 1822. The final printing from the original Hogarth plates. The 'receipt' is a blank example of the receipt Hogarth issued to subscribers who paid seven shillings and six pence for a print from the engraving of his oil painting The March of the Guards to Finchley. The receipt features imagery of warfare. A set of bagpipes can also be seen representing the Scottish Jacobite rebels. The scroll in the foreground is the coat of arms of the Union with the Scottish lion rampant being cut out by a pair of scissors. The 'return' depicts the character of the Farmer seated in a chair and smoking a pipe. His wife enters the scene from the right and is startled by his presence. To the left, standing before a fireplace, are a young girl and a boy. DATE PRINTED: c.1822 using Hogarth's original plates engraved in 1762. SIZE: The sheet is 47 x 63.5 cm, 18.5 x 25 inches. William Hogarth FRSA (10 November 1697 – 26 October 1764) was an English painter, printmaker, pictorial satirist, social critic, and editorial cartoonist. His work ranged from realistic portraiture to comic strip-like series of pictures called "modern moral subjects", perhaps best known being his moral series A Harlot's Progress, A Rake's Progress and Marriage A-la-Mode. Knowledge of his work is so pervasive that satirical political illustrations in this style are often referred to as "Hogarthian". PROVENANCE: Published in 'The Works of William Hogarth, from the original plates restored by James Heath', London: Baldwin and Cradock. The Heath edition was the last to print directly from Hogarth's original engraved plates. All 'Hogarth' prints appearing after this date are merely copies using later engraved plates, in most cases 'toned down' for later sensitivities.TYPE: Antique copper plate etching and engraving printed on paper.
