Description: The Universal MagazineVol. X. - 1752Scientific InstrumentsCamera ObscuraWhale FisherySolar MicroscopePaper Mill Original 1752 volume, January - June + supplement. Exceptional engravings throughout, many of a scientific bent, engineering, early photography, microscopes, mills &c. The fold-out engraving of The Whale Fishery is an important one with details of the slaughter and monstrous polar bears (it has a tear), and others are equally historic and fabulously rendered (and not torn) - The Camera Obscura, Solar Microscope, Diving Bell. Another fabulous frontispiece to start things off as well as other engravings: Gervas's Engine for Raising Water, Ventilators, Curious Mill for Grinding Corn, Other Mills including one for Grinding Cement, Several Mathematical Instruments, Leicester, Lincolnshire, City of Lincoln, Plan & Elevation of Farm Houses, Engravings of noted persons - Herman Boerhaave, St. Frances Bacon, Edward Coke, Nicholas Saunderson, John Dryden, Thomas Sutton, as well as a splendid Cathedral, Discovery of the Gunpowder Plot, Coins, &c. 26 (of 27) plates. Contents include History, Experiments, Politics, Moths, Mountains, Massacres, Making Marbled Paper, Rainbow described, Riddles, the profits from whale hunting, &c. &c. Leather binding is fairly worn, front board missing (though another old leather board will probably be found and placed on front for protection), rear board holding on by one rope, handsome spine with original label. Splendid plates - highly detailed and lovely. Some toning throughout and a few tears, one or two engravings are separated from book, laid-in. Rare historic volume. ******We ship swiftly and with safety in mind. Thank you.
