Description: The Letters of Pliny the Consul: With Occasional Remarks Vol. I, Printed for R. Dodsley, London, 1747, two volumes, full leather, 8vo. Both in fair condition. Front boards are cracked along hinge. Both still attached, but fragile. Boards remain dark and rich in color. Red morocco label with gilt work on spine still bright and clean. Back board of volume one has split down middle center. Does not effect binding, just an aesthetic flaw.Marginalia throughout. Toned end papers. Text block is slightly toned as to be expected. Binding remains intact. Previous owner’s name cut out on title page. Please see photos. Our volumes contain the original, early American bookplate of Robert Rogers on their front paste downs. After the Revolutionary War, Robert Rogers (1758-1835) became a Director and benefactor of the Redwood Library in Newport, Rhode Island. Among other things, he was responsible for the first printed catalogue of their collection. This work by Pliny describes the eruption at Vesuvius in August of 79 AD. It is considered a unique and accurate testimony of Roman administrative history and everyday life in the 1st century. It was likely owned by Rogers during the time of his proprietorship of a classical school in Newport, Rhode Island. It may have been printed by Solomon Southwick, as its style resembles the border on currency printed in Newport in the mid-to-late 1780s. Recent correspondence with the Redwood Library, reveals that Rogers donated many books to the institution. When acquired by the Library, his personal bookplates were covered over by “Redwood Library” paste-downs. In the final photograph above (recently provided by an archivist at the Library), one can just make out the border of our bookplate peeking out above the newer bookplate noting Rogers’s generous donation of books to the Redwood in 1810.
