Description: Antique original 1745 map: A Chart Of Ye West-Indies Or The Islands Of America In The North Sea & C. Being Ye Present Seat Of War. Fascinating map by cartographer Herman Moll depicting the theater of war during The War of Jenkins' Ear (1739 to 1748) between Britain and Spain. True to its name, this war was nominally provoked in 1731 when the Spanish severed the war of British Captain Robert Jenkins: “Another account, in the Pennsylvania Gazette for 7 October 1731, attributes the assault to the Spanish lieutenant Dorce, who "took hold of his left Ear, and with his Cutlass slit it down; and then another of the Spaniards took hold of it and tore it off, but gave him the Piece of his Ear again, bidding him carry it to his Majesty King George.” The war was fought chiefly in the Caribbean but did involve Colonial America as the Colonial Governor of Georgia, James Oglethorpe, led an overland expedition in 1740 laying siege to the fortified St. Augustine, Florida, then a Spanish possession. This map depicts the south east coast of America from Florida and as far north as Albemarle Sound in present day North Carolina. A rare map, guaranteed to be a period original from 17465, not a reprint. Map is missing a section at upper right, but is largely complete. Some edge wear,sold as is. Measures 15” x 12 1/8” (sheet.)
