Light wear to extremities with scuffing and abrasions over surface of original leather. Lovely paneled center with delicate tooling. Front joint repaired nicely. Nearly seamless. Spine abraded with loss of spine label. Gilt tooling has been mostly rubbed away. W.E. Wynne in old hand on the pastedown. Front gutter repaired with Japanese paper. Old hand inscription of “Maurice Wynne his Booke 1719. Solt him in Rommomlorance of Mrs. Sidney Roberts of Ruskin who dy’d the 13th of November 1719” of second fly. Maurice Wynne has also signed the title and dated it 1719. Internally sound with light toning and minor instances of foxing. Free of known marginalia. Binding intact. In the rear reads an inscription “A Gift sent from Oxford March 6th 1715 from Mr. John Bridal to Mrs. Sidney Roberts of Ruskin. Received (?) 17th of year same instanto.. and he dy’d 10th of March 1715-16. Binding remains intact. Please see photos. The eleven chapters of this scarce work depict the connection of happiness and contentment, the sovereignty of God, his unlimited bounty, the surplus of our enjoyment over our suffering, our demerits towards God, his general and particular providence, the advantage of afflictions, misfortunes compacted with other men’s, aids for contentments, resignation and the conclusion.
