Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE WEESILS. A Satyrical Fable: Giving an Account of some Argumental Passages happening in the Lion's Court about Weesilion's taking the Oaths [by THOMAS D'URFREY] Printed in the Year 1691 in London. First edition. This work was long attributed to Thomas Brown but scholars now think "The Weesils" was by English writer and playwright Thomas D'Urfey (c.1653-1723). The poem lampoons the leading Anglican cleric William Sherlock, who had allied with the nonjurors in 1689 by refusing to take the oath of allegiance to the newly crowned William and Mary. Within the year Sherlock had changed his mind, which many, including the author here, blamed on the influence of his wife. This poem is in two parts, but this copy is missing the Postscript.Disbound poem with browning/light foxing to pages and a minor tear to the bottom of the title page and page 1/2.
