Seventh edition, according to Copac. Unfortunately, this work is incomplete, missing the title page and eight preliminary pages, the three folding engraved plates, and the final pages (543-591) of the text. An important work, it would command perhaps ?,000 complete. Gervase (or Jervis) Markham (ca. 1568 ? 3 February 1637) was an English poet and writer. He was a soldier of fortune in the Low Countries, and later was a captain under the Earl of Essex's command in Ireland. He was acquainted with Latin and several modern languages, and had an exhaustive practical acquaintance with the arts of forestry and agriculture. He was a noted horse-breeder, and is said to have imported the first Arabian horse. CONDITION Rebacked in calf with original boards preserved. Externally, quite smart, though with a little bumping and some slight wear to the original leather. Internally, generally firmly bound although front hinge is strained. One plate is close-cropped. Pages have some slight age-toning, and odd ink marks and patches of foxing.
