Description: Special First Day Cover made for the Christmas issue of 1973, Scott #1507, November 7, 1973, Postmasters of America. The Christmas covers have special embossed cachets vs. the normal blue rectangles for the typical covers produced. Each medal is 25 grams of sterling silver, produced by the Franklin Mint. All the cover backs are similar; one for #17 is shown. Condition is as shown in the pics. The covers are post office fresh and the medals are in proof condition. Based on the silver spot price as of this writing gives a value of over $23.00 for the medal alone. Background Information: In 1971 (July 4th) the National Association of Postmasters and the National League of Postmasters jointly produced first day covers with a silver dollar size (3.7 cm diameter) medal encased in each cover. The medals depicted some aspect of the stamp being issued. Each medal is approximately 25 grams of sterling silver and has a sterling mark on the edge (I have weighed a number of these are there is a variation from between 24 and 27 grams). They are encased in plastic and mounted on a blue card that can easily be removed from the special covers. These covers were produced until 1980 at the time when the Hunt Brothers attempted to corner the silver market, driving the price up to $120 per ounce. A 25 gram weight of sterling silver (92.5%) is equivalent to approximately 0.74 Troy ounces of pure silver. The silver spot price as of this listing is over $31.00, giving an equivalent value of over $23.00 per medal for the silver alone. I have many other of these covers and year sets I will be listing; please inquire and check my other listings (other items). Shipping and handling for this lot is $6.00 in the U.S. Thanks!
