Kinetic Model Kits has been very active in producing high quality 1/48 scale aircraft with an emphasis on interesting subjects. The F/A-18 Hornet has been around for quite a while and the crown for the 1/48 scale model has long sat upon Hasegawa’s head. In 2016, Kinetic changed all that with their release of the F/A-18C. It has been described as the hands-down winner in any head-to-head comparison between the kits. This 2017 release has gorgeous decals for the 2017 Blue Angels team, but the kit has all the parts needed to build an A, B, C or D variant (just without weapons). There are about a dozen listings for this kit on eBay (almost all from China or Europe), but as a Top Rated Plus US Seller, I have this in stock and can reliably ship this item very quickly. Here are a few examples of the abundant praise for the quality and copious detail of this kit from around the web: The Kinetic Model Kits website just has a simple page showing the stunning box art and the Cartograf decal sheet, but no other information about the kit. There are also loads of links to aftermarket parts, reviews and photo galleries of Hornet projects. Michael Benolkin penned an enthusiastic First Look Review on the cybermodeler.com site. He gives you large, detailed photos of all the sprues, decals and the PE fret. He compiled a very long list of features and options for this kit and had very nice things to say about the accuracy of the decals for the 2017 Blue Angels team. He appreciated the ongoing efforts by Kinetic to improve their kits, relating the following facts: “When the first F/A-18C kit was released, the rudders were molded integral with the vertical stabilizers, and when the F/A-18A was released, that kit had separate rudders. Kinetic eventually retooled the F/A-18C/D tails to also provide separate rudders. This kit has the separate rudders for the A/B/C/D models.” Amilcar Mosque Jr. did a very helpful In-Box Review on the Portuguese-language IPMS-Rio site (aprj.com.br). You get around two dozen high-resolution photos highlighting many of the extremely detailed parts, as well as excerpts from the instructions and painting guide. He notes that a single seater or two-seater aircraft can be built, as well as options for folding wings and flap positions. In summary, he said: “With this incredible launch, Kinetic increases its extensive line of models in the 1/48 scale, as well as its f/a-18 model line.” There is a lengthy Unboxing / partial Build post on the Chinese-language lstfazz.blogspot.com site. You get a very thorough set of sprue photos, along with shots of parts details. The author starts building the kit, but it doesn’t go beyond the masking tape stage. The translation had some dubious spots, such as: “Can fans who like this theme step on it?” but I think the modeler liked this kit. This kit is in a large, beautiful box about 18.5” x 12” x 3.5”. As you can see from the pictures, the box is in outstanding shape and is still sealed with tape strips, so I consider it factory sealed and absolutely gift-ready. This item contains one complete injection molded plastic model kit with detailed grey and clear plastic parts, a large sheet of awesome Cartograf decals (designed by CrossDelta) and even some photo etched metal parts to make almost any F/A-18 variant (A through D).
