Historical Significance The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker was originally designed to replace the KC-97 Tanker. The first KC-135, derived from the Boeing 367-80 (Dash 80), laid the groundwork for both the KC-135 and the Boeing 707. The USAF placed its first order in 1954, and the initial KC-135A took flight in August 1956, with deliveries starting in June 1957. Initially equipped with Pratt & Whitney J-57 Turbo-Jet engines, the KC-135A was later upgraded in the 1980s to the KC-135E with Pratt & Whitney JT3D TurboFan engines, enhancing reliability and performance. The final upgrade to high bypass CFM-56 engines resulted in the KC-135R, nearly doubling the power and capability of the original model. The 916th ARW of Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina, retired its last KC-135R on February 8, 2020, transitioning to the KC-46A in June 2020.
