Description: Details:13th – 14th Century Western European Arming SwordThese swords are super rare when they are in a fine state of preservation. Most swords are recovered from the earth and rivers and are simple skeletons. This particular sword has all original parts with no loose fitting.This type of Knights sword comes from the period of mediaeval history where control of Jerusalem and the Holy Land was no longer the primary focus. Crusaders were tossed by either the order or the Pope against their enemies of their fate. During this period Crusades continued to be fought in the Baltic regions and in Spain against the Muslims. this style of sword is commonly referred to as the arming sword, the quintessential cut and trust sword. it is a shorter one handed design and this allows for better mobility and both the ability to trust and cut with speed. the hill design accompanied with the shorter quillons point to the sword likely being Spanish but some similar French swords share the same pommel characteristics which is multifaceted. However, this example has a set of straight quillons which is a traditional crucifix form hilt and heavier / stouter blade. Spanish swords from this period do still exist and the similarities give stronger weight to it being Spanish.Spanish swords tend to have a shorter set of quillions, and one particular example shares very similar quillon design. The hilt of the sword has an exposed tang and a large oval pommel which is multifaceted. The guard are two curved down swept quillons with flared ends perforated on every side. These perforations would have been inlaid with some form of bronze, copper or stones.the quillions show they have received extreme trauma, seeing that one side is bent outwards. This evidence is reinforced by the extreme wear on that side of the blade and indicated it was the domain cutting and contact area. The sword which was wielded by a right-handed knight has a slight cant to the left and is evidence of the extreme forces that struck it. The blade has an oval cross-section and while it refines to a fine point its dense profile giving it a stiffer blade with some flexibility.
