Description: Wild Black Raspberry- (Rubus occidentalis) Hardy USDA Zone 4-7 Please read seed germinating information before ordering. "Patience is bitter, but its fruit is sweet." Black raspberry's can withstand higher summer temperatures and more humidity than red raspberry's, but are less cold hardy. "Easy to grow once established" and require little care other than cutting out the older canes in spring if desired. Plants will spread once established by canes bending and taking root at the tips similar to a walking onion. The plants will not spread from underground root runners like red raspberries. They produce the best berry crop with adequate rain or watering. Seeds have been collected from wild plants selected for larger than average size berries, and disease resistant canes. Seed Germination: The easiest way to germinate black raspberry seed is to plant the seed in summer or early fall and let nature do all the work for you. If you want to grow transplants or grow plants in pots see the following seed germinating information. Place seed in a damp sterile planting medium like paper towels, peat moss, clean sand or light aerated soil in planting pots with a light mulch to maintain moisture.Place the seed and planting medium in Ziploc bags or a glass jar leaving plastic bag or jar partially open to allow seed to breath.Keep seed damp at room temperature (60° to 70°F.) for 90 days being careful to watch for mold or mildew.Move seed to a cold place like a refrigerator or garage.Keep seed at (35° to 45°F.) for an additional 90 days.Plant seed 1/16" to 1/8" deep in pots or outdoors.Keep at around 50° to 60°F. Seed will germinate in 4-6 weeks. A light mulch helps to prevent seeds from drying out. The seed germinates erratically and requires some patience on the part of the grower in order to be successful. In the wild seeds are distributed mostly by birds and wild animals. Black raspberry seed can survive in the soil for several years. Planting: Black raspberry plants are adaptable to many soil types but prefer a soil with good drainage high in organic matter and a pH of below 6.8. Plants can be spaced 1 1/2 to 3 feet apart in rows at least 5 feet apart to prevent plants from creating an impenetrable thorny hedge. Raspberry's can also be planted at random similar to their natural growth habit in the wild. Expect plants to produce fruit 16 to 18 months after transplanting. Root cuttings or rooted cane tips can be taken from plants once established and replanted to create new raspberry plants. Plants can grow from 5 to 9 feet tall with good soil fertility. Can be grown in full sun but seem to grow best in partial shade. Mulching the plants will accelerate the growth rate and produce fruit earlier than unmulched plants. Uses: Black raspberries are good eaten fresh, but also make some of the best flavored jelly which is high in anthocyanins. Plants are attractive to wildlife which feed on the fruit and can provide cover for nesting birds. Flowers provide bees with nectar and pollen in the spring. (seed is wild collected and organically grown.)
