The queen palm is a fast-growing tree once planted in any warm season, growing around two to six feet a year after it's established and depending on its site . The tree will reach a mature height that is up to 60 feet depending on the site conditions. It has the standard palm tree shape, featuring graceful arching fronds at the top of the trunk. The feathery, glossy green fronds are pinnately compound, each up to 15 feet long. They are considered to be moderately tolerant of salt spray. They can reach heights up to 60 ft with a spread of 20–25 ft. The smooth gray trunk varies from 8–15 inches in diameter, depending on the seed source and environment, and may contain bulges. Large inflorescences of cream-colored flowers are produced from within the leaves in the canopy during spring and summer months. These are followed by bright orange, round to slightly elongated fruits between ¾ and 1 inch long . These palms are moderately cold hardy, doing well in areas of Zone 9B that border 10A.
