10 cc. of NEW-ENGLAND ALMANACK FOR 1803-1817, New-London, Samuel Green, Wrappers

Description: This lot consists of a Non-Consecutive Run of 10 Different Copies of THE NEW-ENGLAND ALMANACK AND GENTLEMEN AND LADIES' DIARY, FOR THE YEAR OF OUR LORD CHRIST...Fitted to the Meridian of New-London...Containing Besides the Astronomical Calculations a great Variety of USEFUL AND ENTERTAINING MATTER (title varies slightly throughout this run). The Astronomical Calculations Performed by Nathan Daboll, and all but one Printed and Sold by Samuel Green in New-London (Connecticut). The following is a more in-depth description of each of the almanacs in this lot, most having untrimmed margins and 6 out of 10 are complete, Including:1) 1803 - Printed in 1802, containing 18 leaves, however, about 1/3 of leaf # 16 has been removed leaving only the upper and lower parts of the leaf in place, which includes a poem and an epitaph. Early ink notations throughout the almanac indicate this copy was owned by John Morgan (1790-1873) and Israel Allyn (1761-1840) who were both from Groton, CT. Paper is toned and spotted with dog-eared pp. and roughly cut pp. Drake 6482) 1804 - Printed in 1803, 18 leaves, however, the last leaf is lacking, and there is a bite out of the upper corner of the preceding leaf resulting in some loss of text. There is also a red stain cover some of the front wrapper and in the upper right corners of several pp. within causing a slight loss of legibility to the front cover. Like the one above, this copy is heavily annotated with old ink notations and includes references to Groton & New-London, but w/o any written names. A little cleaner but toned within. Drake 6573) 1805 - Printed in 1804, 18 leaves, but lacking the last leaf and the leaf preceding it has old celophane tape repairs, chips and edge-tears to it, and most of the pages of this almanac are dog-eared with lots of edge chips and tears, which is also heavily annotated with old ink entries including the ownership of Frederick Morgan, presumably also from the Groton-New London area of Connecticut. Contents are toned and somewhat spotted. Drake 6664) 1807 - Printed and Sold by Cady & Ellis, New-London in 1806, 18 leaves, Complete, with the early ink ownership of Lucy Davis, Groton. Soiling and spotting, more so to the rear wrapper. Drake 6945) 1810 - Printed in 1809, 18 leaves, but lacking leaf #15. With the early ink ownerships of Nathan Davis; Lucy Davis, Groton; Betsy Newberry; Mary Bu.....; W... Paly; Miss Sally Davis; etc. It is spotted, toned and soiled and the last leaf is heavily chipped, torn and soiled and missing a piece from the upper outside corner, but with no loss of text. Drake 7286) 1814 - Printed in 1813, 16 leaves, this copy having lost its stitching and is disbound. Almanac has some old ink notations, is moderately spotted, toned, and soiled, more so the wrappers, the rear one having more soiling, edge-chips and tears and 3 punctures causing slight losses of text. Drake 7627) 1815 - Printed in 1814, 16 leaves, contents lightly to moderately toned, spotted and stained, more so to the wrappers. Drake 7708) 1816 - Printed in 1815, 16 leaves, condition as in #7, but with right margin of front wrapper trimmed close. Drake 7829) 1817 - Printed in 1816, 16 leaves, margins are untrimmed and ratty with lots of edge-tears and dog-ears, but no loss of text and like others with spotting and toning, more so to the wrappers. This is the only issue in the lot that has a woodcut of the American Spread Eagle on its front wrapper***. Drake 79410) 1818 - Printed in 1817, 16 leaves printed on a heavier laid paper than the previous ones. Light to moderate spotting, toning and soiling, more so to the wrappers, with untrimmed and dog-eared pp. Drake 806***The American Eagle symbol has been used in many ways throughout history, from the Great Seal of the United States to the coins in our pockets. However, one of the most prominent places that the American Eagle is seen today is on homes throughout America. The use of the American Eagle as a decorative element on homes has a long history. In the early 19th century, it became popular to display patriotic symbols on homes. This was especially true in the United States after the War of 1812, when Americans wanted to show their pride and patriotism for their country.
